New teen drama recalls the horror of Chernobyl
Chernobyl: The Exclusion Zone follows a group of present-day Russian teens on a road-trip to the disaster zone
A forthcoming Russian teen drama will bring the story of Chernobyl, the world's worst civilian nuclear disaster, to a new generation
Chernobyl: The Exclusion Zone, which airs later this month, follows a group of modern teenagers on a road-trip to Pripyat, the nuclear plant workers' town that was evacuated after the disaster. The television drama depicts the teenagers as they slowly learn more about the 1986 tragedy.
One scene features a character snapping pictures on his iPad as the group visit an abandoned school, while in another the teens drive past Kopachi, a village that was torn down and buried by the Soviet authorities after the accident, in an experimental attempt to contain the contamination.
Pripyat itself is now a ghost town, where radiation levels remain high and authorities control access to the overgrown streets. The show's production crew were allowed to enter the town to shoot scenes for the drama.
