We Might Have Another Chernobyl on Our Hands
We all remember Chernobyl, yeah? That horrid nuclear disaster that’s largely responsible for turning the world away from what may be our last and best hope for saving ourselves from climate change? Well… It’s about to happen again. And that’s awful for like a million reasons. Most of them pretty obvious.
Earlier this week, staff at the Hanford Site (a nuclear waste storage facility were alerted to a possible emergency and ordered to take cover. The issue was caused by a tunnel collapse leading to a plant that processes waste plutonium from reactors.
The Hanford Site also doesn’t have the best safety track record. The former governor of Washington State, where the facility is located, once called it “an underground Chernobyl waiting to happen,” and it has often been called one of the most dangerous places in the US. And now, it’s even worse.
