Chernobyl@30 - A timely reminder of Chernobyl is to play at theatres acrossthe North East
If Chernobyl has slipped into history along with the USSR, overtaken
by other pressing concerns, it’s probably time for a reminder.
That is to come from Northumberland’s
award-winning theatre company Théâtre Sans Frontières (TSF) whose
latest production, Chernobyl@30, is to tour North East venues at the end
of September.
Actually, it’s a co-production with Ukrainian
theatre company Arabesky who first tackled Chernobyl in a
documentary-style theatre production back in 2006.
It interwove
film footage of Chernobyl with scenes based on some of the people
involved, including those engaged in the clean-up operation, politicians
and ordinary citizens affected by the blast.
The collaboration results from an award by the British Council to
TSF’s co-founder and joint artistic director Sarah Kemp who visited
Arabesky Theatre last autumn.
Sarah will perform in the piece, a
re-visiting of the original 2006 production, with fellow TSF stalwart
John Cobb, British actor Robert Nicholson and Ukrainian counterparts
Natalya Tsymbal and Mykhylo Barbara.
It is being directed by Arabesky Theatre founder and artistic director Svitlana Oleshko.
